“Oyez, oyez, oyez”, was the cry from Madeleine Bills, the current Mayor for Mangotsfield, her husband also a former Crier for Bristol.

Madeleine gave a jovial presentation on a hot night for all. She was dressed in full regalia!

She started by outlining why there was a need for a Crier. Many could not read in the past and hence the need, if you wanted to know what was going on.

This was not just the only duty of the Crier. They would read wedding banns, turn out the street lights, ensure some punishments were served etc. Paraded backwards on a horse being one such punishment. Indeed it is tradition that any visiting monarch should be fronted by the local Crier. Mr Croot for Queen Victoria’s visit being an example.

We were shown many trophies and medals of Madeleine’s time as a Crier from all over the world. Visiting five of the ten Bristol’s in the USA to name but a few, entering many competitions and attending conventions. Of course, we had the ringing of the bell. We even had one forthcoming audience member give it an admirable try.

Today, you might see a Crier opening various events, used as birthday treat or commercially promoting the area they represent. Albeit Bristol does not promote itself well in this respect.

So thanks to Madeleine and God Save the King !
