Buildings of Delight – Follies and Grottoes of the Bristol area by Peter Godfrey – 7th October 2025

Neptune at Warmley

Bristol has more than its fair share of these quirky buildings, some built of probably foolish purpose.

The audience took great delight in knowing and not knowing where some of the places were in the Bristol area. Peter showed a variety of such buildings to identify.

An easy one to start with, Blaise Castle. Built in 1766 for £3000. Do you know that it is mentioned in the Jane Austen novel Northanger Abbey?

We then moved on to cover The Lord Mayors Chapel on College Green and the folly based on it in Henbury.

Do you know where you might find the old spire of St Michaels Church in Winterbourne, it is nor far removed?

Cotham Tower and Hollywood Tower were also shown although they may no longer exist or are in disrepair.

Closer to home, Neptune and the Grottoes at Warmley were covered. These made full use of the waste materials left from smelting in the area.

Peter finished with the Black Castle and other follies close by. The castle was originally the stable block for Arnos Manor.
